Chrysler to Use Fiat Technology in 6 Autos, IHS Says (Update1)
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Mike Ramsey

June 11 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler Group LLC, the revamped U.S. automaker led by Fiat SpA, will use technology from the Italian company in six of its vehicles and help build six Fiat- brand cars, research firm IHS Global Insight Inc. said.

Fiat platforms will be used in redesigned versions of Chrysler’s Dodge Caliber, and Journey and Jeep Liberty sport- utility vehicles, IHS said in a report today. IHS predicts the Chrysler and Fiat models will be built during the next three years at plants in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Chrysler Group has access to fuel-efficient autos and global markets through its alliance with Fiat. Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive officer of both companies, said yesterday that Chrysler plants would begin receiving Fiat tooling and technology over the next several months. A Chrysler spokesman declined to confirm IHS’s projections.

“It’s way too early to speculate on this,” said Rick Deneau of Chrysler. “We are working these plans out now.”

The platforms consist of almost all components used in a car that the average person can’t see, said John Wolkonowicz, an analyst with Lexington, Massachusetts-based IHS who co-wrote the report. They include steering, electrical systems, suspensions and exhaust systems.

“I think it’s going to be very difficult,” said Wolkonowicz. “The Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep stuff still has to have a style very different from the Fiat stuff.”

The platforms would replace Chrysler’s existing components for various models of Chrysler’s mid-sized cars, Wolkonowicz said. The study also gives production plan estimates for three new Chrysler vehicles, five Alfa Romeo luxury cars and the assembly of the Fiat 500 subcompact car.

Chrysler Plants

IHS predicts that most of the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler vehicles will be built at plants in Belvidere, Illinois; Toluca, Mexico; and Toledo, Ohio. The Fiat models will be produced at plants in Detroit, Toluca and Brampton, Ontario.

The Fiat platforms will also be used in the Jeep Panda, the Dodge Hornet and the replacement for the Chrysler Sebring, the IHS report said.

Documents from bankruptcy court show that Chrysler plans to build at least one car in the U.S. based on an Alfa Romeo platform.

Chrysler Group LLC was formed yesterday from the sale of most the assets of Chrysler LLC, which filed for bankruptcy on April 30. Turin, Italy-based Fiat now owns 20 percent of the new company, and the U.S., Canada and a health-care trust fund for union retirees also own stakes.

.....but on the same day, I read where the divisions will be catagorized as follows:

Passenger Vehicles............Chrysler only

Trucks............................Dodge only

SUV's.............................Jeep only

in other words, no "Chrysler" SUV's, no "Dodge" Passenger Vehicles and no "Jeep" Trucks or Passenger Vehicles.

leads me to believe that would wipe out the Compass, Avenger, Charger, Challenger :( and Caliber among others.

but then again I read something about the Caliber having a 'redesign' using a Fiat platform.

I'm soooooooo confused!

Oh, I agree......manufacturers say all the time 'we're bringing the blah, blah, blah concept to life' BUT when it is finally produced, it looks NOTHING like the concept.

Look at the Chevy Volt 'concept' compared to the 'production' Chevy Volt.

Nooooo!
Not the Charger and Challenger!

Say it ain't so.

Dodge has been the Truck division AND the performance division.
They've gotta keep something fast.

They could just rebrand the Challenger and Charger like they did the neons in the 90's.

Chrysler to Sell 4 Fiat 500 Models in U.S., CEO Says (Update1)

By Mike Ramsey and Sara Gay Forden

July 2 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler Group LLC, the U.S. automaker run by Fiat SpA, will sell four models of the Italian carmaker’s 500 subcompact in the U.S., Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said.

Chrysler, which emerged from bankruptcy on June 10, will eventually sell a convertible, wagon and sporty version called the “Abarth” in addition to the four-seat subcompact in the U.S., Marchionne said in an interview on June 30. While the base 500 will go on sale next year, he didn’t say when the other models will be available.

“All of those cars will be coming to the U.S.,” Marchionne said. “Fiat will be known in the U.S. purely in terms of its 500 car.”

Fiat, based in Turin, Italy, owns 20 percent of Chrysler Group, and is sharing vehicles and technology with the U.S. car company in exchange for ownership. Fiat said it sold 190,000 of the small cars, which are about the same size as Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s Mini.

In Europe, the Fiat small car can be equipped with a 1.2- liter or 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine or a 1.3-liter turbo diesel. The 1.4-liter engine variant gets a combined, city- highway average of 36 miles per gallon under European regulatory standards.

“Its biggest impact will be to spark interest in bringing people back into the dealerships,” Aaron Bragman, a Troy, Michigan-based analyst with IHS Global Insight Inc., said in an interview. “Given the fact that it is an unusual car and quirky and cute, it is a good car for them.”

Chrysler’s most efficient model today is the Dodge Caliber, which gets 24 to 30 miles per gallon.

Chrysler, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, filed for bankruptcy on April 30 because of plunging car sales.

I gave Chrysler a chance. I waited as long as I could for the Honet, but my daughter needed a car. I got a really good price on the Toyota. I couldn't pass it up.

I read this morning that Chrysler is adding something like 100 new dealers. Makes alot of sense, after just dumping 800 of them. DUH! :notallthere:

No, I think that Chrysler took advantage of the bankruptcy to dump the dealers they didn't want, for whatever reason, and now they can pick up some new ownership, open up some new facilities and get what THEY wanted all long.

Just before the closing of the 789 dealers, some 35% of the total 3189 dealers were behind on their payments to Chrysler. Maybe now you can see why almost a 1/4th of the dealers were closed.

Yep. Not all that loss their dealership were low volume dealers. Some were high volume. Also, there was an article I read (don't remember where now) that mentioned a significant number that loss their dealerships supported the Republican party, suggesting that our prez and his team are going after businesses that supported the other party.
